If you have the misfortune of being involved in an auto accident, remember these five steps:
- Remain calm and still if you are injured. Wait for medical help.
- Don’t make any admissions or statements about your own involvement in the incident. Anything you say can be used in a jury trial, should it come to that.
- Get the names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, car tag numbers, name of insurance carriers, and policy numbers of others involved in the accident. If you can, obtain information from witnesses.
- Call the police. When law enforcement officers ask for a statement, be clear and concise. Don’t volunteer details that don’t matter or may work against you. Write down officers’ names and badge numbers.
Call your insurance agent, after consulting with your attorney, as soon as you can. Report the accident, and provide him or her with all the information you collected. You may be advised not to talk to other people’s insurance agents.

Each year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of people sustain head injuries. Often some of these head injuries involve trauma to the brain, which can be fatal or greatly debilitating. Brain injury can be caused by a prolonged lack of oxygen to the brain as well as a blunt trauma to the skull. In some cases, brain injury can occur from a serious and abrupt whipping action of the brain inside the skull even when there is no direct trauma to the exterior of the skull.
There are a number of tests, which are of assistance in determining the existence of and the extent of brain injury. These tests include but are not limited to X-ray, CT scan, MRI, PET and neuropsychological testing.
Injuries to the brain can cause a myriad of problems. The brain controls movement, respiratory function, cognition, etc. and symptoms from brain injury can range from a mild concussion resulting in headaches, loss of memory, anti-social behavior and loss of IQ to varying degrees of paralysis.
The spinal cord runs from the brain down the back and consists of a bundle of nerves protected by vertebrae. Different parts of the spinal cord control the different functions of the body; and control muscles and sense of touch, etc.
Spinal cord injuries can be extremely serious, painful and even result in paralysis and varying degrees of incapacity. The spinal column consists of four areas, the Cervical (neck area), the Thoracic (chest area), the Lumbar (back area) and the Sacral (low back area). Severe damage to the Cervical or Thoracic regions can result in paralysis. Insult to the Lumbar or Sacral regions may cause loss of bowel/bladder control, pain and/or numbness.
