Spinal Cord Injury
|
|
The spinal cord runs from the brain down the back and consists of a bundle of nerves
protected by vertebrae. Different parts of the spinal cord control the different
functions of the body; and control muscles and sense of touch, etc.
Spinal cord injuries can be extremely serious, painful and even result in paralysis
and varying degrees of incapacity. The spinal column consists of four areas, the
Cervical (neck area), the Thoracic (chest area), the Lumbar (back area) and the
Sacral (low back area). Severe damage to the Cervical or Thoracic regions can result
in paralysis. Insult to the Lumbar or Sacral regions may cause loss of bowel/bladder
control, pain and/or numbness.
