Pradaxa® Causes Severe Bleeding
Pradaxa® is a medication used as a blood thinner, which has been found to cause severe bleeding in some patients. Lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer of Pradaxa® by persons that experienced severe unstoppable bleeding after taking Pradaxa. ® The lawsuits allege that the manufacturer of Pradaxa® failed to adequately warn patients and physicians of the risk of severe, unstoppable bleeding while taking this drug.
In 2011, the FDA released a safety warning about the potentially life threatening risks associated with use of Pradaxa. ® Patients taking Pradaxa® have experienced gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, kidney bleeding, brain hemorrhaging, heart attack and internal bleeding. There is no known reversal agent that can be used to stop the bleeding caused by Pradaxa. The bleeding risks associated with the drug may be fatal.
If you or a loved one took Pradaxa® and experienced severe bleeding as a result, you may be entitled to compensation.
Pradaxa® (Dabigatran), is an anti-coagulate, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, a German pharmaceutical company. Pradaxa® is prescribed to prevent blood clots and strokes resulting from blood clots in people who have the heart condition known as atrial fibrillation. Pradaxa® is in a class of anti-coagulant (''blood thinner'') medications called direct thrombin inhibitors. Pradaxa® was approved by the FDA in October of 2010.
The increased risk of excessive bleeding caused by Pradaxa® is associated with an increase in the rate of gastrointestinal bleeding despite the overall lower rates of bleeding at other sites. A trend of higher hemorrhaging risk was seen with advancing age. This risk was under-estimated in clinical trials giving rise to suspicions that the Phase III test results were not adequately reported and that the warning concerning the impact of gastrointestinal bleeds was diluted. There is no antidote for persons who begin to bleed while on Pradaxa.® The bleeding caused by Pradaxa may be fatal.
