Each year in the United States hundreds of thousands of people sustain head injuries. Often some of these head injuries involve traumatic to the brain which can be fatal or greatly debilitating. Brain injury can be caused by a prolonged lack of oxygen to the brain as well as a blunt trauma to the skull. In some cases, brain injury can occur from a serious and abrupt whipping action of the brain inside the skull even when there is no direct trauma to the exterior of the skull.
There are a number of tests which are of assistance in determining the existence of and the extent of brain injury. These tests include but are not limited to x-ray, CT scan, MRI and neuropsychological testing.
Injuries to the brain can cause a myriad of problems. The brain controls movement, respiratory function, cognition, etc. and symptoms from brain injury can range from a mild concussion resulting in headaches, loss of memory, anti-social behavior and loss of IQ to varying degrees of paralysis.
