Judge Approves BP Settlement

A federal judge approved BP’s business and economic loss settlement on December 21, 2012. It is estimated that BP will pay $7.8 billion to resolve the related claims caused by the 2010 spill. The agreement covers businesses and individuals in the Gulf Coast areas economically disadvantaged by the spill. As part of the settlement, BP will pay $2.3 billion in seafood-related claims by commercial fishing vessel owners, captains and deckhands.

President Obama signs the RESTORE Act

President Barack Obama signed the legislation into law late Friday afternoon that will direct billions of dollars in BP oil leak fine funds to Louisiana’s coast. The omnibus transportation bill, which includes the RESTORE Act billions for Gulf Coast states, also gives $1.47 billion to Louisiana in highway construction and transit funds over two years. East Baton Rouge Parish’s share is an estimated $200 million.

Oil spill settlement process has been a major economic engine for Louisiana

After less than a month at the helm of Gulf of Mexico oil spill settlement claims, Lafayette lawyer Patrick Juneau surveyed his huge operation and had an epiphany. He realized his Deepwater Horizon Claims Settlement office wasn't just doling out billions of dollars of BP money to those with legitimate spill damage, he was also overseeing Louisiana's biggest economic engine. "We're going to be paying big-time revenues to people and they'll be spending that money here, but there are also huge benefits for Louisiana and in particular New Orleans," he said.

BP Oil Spill Settlement Grants Will Pay for Health Services

Health care services in southeastern Louisiana will get a major share of the $104 million in grant money included in the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlement, according to papers filed in federal court on Thursday. The grants, expected to cover five years of services, include $50 million for a Primary Care Capacity Project to expand and improve access to health care in underserved coastal communities, $36 million for behavioral and mental health needs, and $4 million to train community health workers. Another $15 million will be used to expand environmental health expertise and literacy.

BP Oil Spill Settlement Proposal Would Resolve Billions in Claims

A federal judge in New Orleans is set to preside over a hearing on a proposed class-action settlement that would resolve billions of dollars in claims against BP over the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP estimates it will pay about $7.8 billion (€5.93 billion) to resolve these claims, but the settlement doesn't have a cap.
