Actos® linked to Bladder CancerActos® LawsuitsStudies show a link between bladder cancer and Actos®. Lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer of Actos® by persons diagnosed with bladder cancer after taking this drug. The lawsuits allege that the manufacturer of Actos® failed to adequately warn patients and physicians of the risk of developing bladder cancer while taking this drug. Actos® has also been associated with an increased risk of kidney cancer, heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. The lawsuits hold Takeda Pharmaceuticals America Inc. (Takeda), the manufacturer of Actos, and other responsible entities liable for a variety of pharmaceutical product liability claims. The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana has been assigned all federal Actos cases. The cases will be heard by the Honorable Rebecca F. Doherty. More than 100 Actos bladder cancer lawsuits have been transferred to the Western District of Louisiana, and the number of cases filed are expected to increase significantly. If you or a loved one took Actos® and was diagnosed with bladder cancer or suffered a heart attack you may be entitled to compensation. About Actos®Actos® (Pioglitazone), manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, is a thiazolidinedione medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. Actos® helps control diabetes by increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin. The FDA recently approved an updated drug label for the drug, which states that the use of the drug for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning that persons taking Actos for more than a year have an increased risk of developing bladder cancer. Studies show that patients taking Actos are 40% more likely to develop bladder cancer. Other studies in Europe have found the same correlation between bladder cancer and Actos. After the release of such studies, the use of Actos was suspended in France, and has become highly regulated in Europe. The results of this study are similar to those obtained in the United States in a California study. Since Actos has been scientifically linked to the development of an increased risk of bladder cancer, the newly updated drug label now recommends that healthcare providers should not prescribe Actos for patients with bladder cancer.
